Every statistic below links directly to the organization that published it. Survey figures describe the respondents and years named by their sources, not every household in the country. For practical firearm care and storage, always follow the firearm manufacturer’s guidance and applicable laws.
About 4 in 10
Pew Research Center reported that about four-in-ten U.S. adults lived in a household with a gun in its June 2023 survey. Thirty-two percent said they personally owned one.

CDC reported that approximately 30 million children lived in homes with firearms in 2021.

The 2023 Annual Firearms Manufacturing and Exportation Report recorded 8,466,729 domestically produced firearms, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s published summary of the federal data.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation reported this total for 2023, calculated as domestic production plus imports, less exports. Its breakdown lists 8,176,535 handguns, 3,899,907 rifles and 1,498,211 shotguns.
